I am a Bible preacher….by that I mean that it is the infallible – perfect – preserved Word of God that is the basis and substance of my preaching and teaching! I am glad that a lot of preachers that I know and have a friendship with are the exact same in their approach to Bible preaching — but, I still see a lot of ‘preaching’ today that is neither Bible-based, nor Biblical! Consider these verses about the Word of God.

For our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, and in much assurance; as ye know what manner of men we were among you for your sake. (1 Thessalonians 1:5)

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you. (1 Peter 1:22-25)

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. (2 Timothy 3:15)

First and foremost our gospel must be based on the Word of God. Bible preaching must involve preaching the gospel. There are some who preach only the gospel. This is as out of balance as not preaching the gospel. There is too much “hit and run” preaching going on that neither feeds nor helps God’s people. Don’t butcher the Bible to make a point. Stay with the text. Reading a few verses, and then going off on a tangent, never referring back to the text or any other Scripture is not Biblical preaching. The typical three point preaching of today is, 1) Read the text; 2) Depart from the text; 3) Never return to the text. Preacher, mark it down—No amount of screaming, hollering or showmanship will make up for the lack of Scriptural content in a sermon.

Some think that only “expositional” preaching is the only style to be used….while I certainly do and enjoy expository messages, I am not foolish enough to think that is the only style the Lord can use! Instead of being confined to “expository”, “topical”, “textual”, etc….I would prefer to just stick with BIBLE preaching! Here are a few benefits of just preaching the Bible!

Bible Preaching Edifies and produces a Scripture taught congregation. Cults and contemporary groups are growing in leaps and bounds as the result of the average Church member being unable to defend his or her beliefs—largely because of a lack of Bible preaching/teaching.

Bible Preaching Equips God’s people for service. Hit and miss, here and there preaching does not educate believers in the Word like Bible-based preaching will. A few anemic points and an emotional story will not equip the people of God for service.

Bible Preaching Eliminates the tendency to ride hobby horses by keeping the preacher in the text.

Bible Preaching Emphasizes the Scriptures more than any other type of preaching. Verse by verse preaching requires that the preacher draw the main part of his sermon from the text. Hence, the Word of God is the main part of the message.

Bible Preaching Enriches the Pastor’s personal knowledge of God’s Word. As a Pastor, we must be a student and a workman of the Word to prepare and preach expository sermons—thus setting an example for all!

Bible Preaching Establishes a solid Scriptural foundation for faith and practice. The Bible is our final authority—Bible-based preaching gives people a solid foundation upon which to stand.

Bible preaching requires more study and hard work on the preacher’s part. However, preaching is our duty. Preachers must prepare their sermons and take preaching seriously if they are going to feed their people. May we be encouraged to stand firm on the Word of God and preach It —“rightly dividing the word of truth”.
